Nia White Belt Training takes you on a journey of self-discovery by exploring the art of sensation through 13 principles for body-centered awareness. 

Each principle teaches you a variety of skills and practices to increase your body literacy - the ability to listen to your body - and empowers you to make choices that enhance health and total well-being on and off the dance floor.

Nia White Belt teaches you the Art of Sensation through five core areas of study:

  • Movement - the study of moving, health + potential 

  • Anatomy - the study of body design, parts + systems 

  • Science - the study of body awareness, health + vitality

  • Music - the study of sound, health + expression

  • Philosophy - the study of the body's inherent wisdom

PRINCIPLE 1: Joy of Movement is the foundation for the entire body of Nia work. This principle teaches you to choose sensation to connect to joy. in Nia, the word JOY expresses a universal energy, different from emotional enjoyment. As you learn to sense your body, you can invite JOY into the experience of your life. Over time and through Nia practice, you can learn to sustain and increase the amount of JOY you sense and experience!

Meet Your Trainer

Susan Sloan

* Being a Nia teacher is like being a curator of the greatest art exhibition ever! If Nia is art, then movement is the brush strokes and I am the paint. I feel so privileged to be able to call myself a Nia Trainer, while every day I learn more about the importance and impact of Nia as an eager student. I am in awe of the artists I work alongside with teaching Nia, and believe that the joy it brings is a mural full of colour and life! Nia allows me to incorporate all my life’s history and celebrate the tapestry of who I am and share with others wholeheartedly. I thrive on discovering creativity and healing, as others emerge with theirs, through Dance and Movement. Nia gives us the opportunity to create and curate a life of stillness, purpose and reach our potential. When more people move their bodies, their purpose will be clear, which will help them build a more meaningful future as architects of their life. Being a Teacher Trainer since 2013, I have learnt that every class, training or workshop is as magical as the first- a blank canvas of endless potential and joy. Susan initially trained as a Hatha Yoga Instructor in 2000 (ISHTA Yoga Teachers-YTF, IYF) and has been teaching yoga and Nia Technique since 2003. In 2003 Susan founded the Nia and Yoga studio in Dunkeld West, Johannesburg, named Studio Kairos. The studio is a co-creation of community; love for our practice as individuals and understanding that together we are strong and designers of a better future for all. Susan has been involved in Health, Movement and Healing since 2000. She teaches at the Old Eds Virgin Active Gym, as well as in corporate and government organizations. Susan is also a Hands-on Healing Reiki Master(Usui)/Trainer and Level 7 Kahuna Massage Therapist and has explored workshops with Gabor Mate on The Wisdom of Trauma and healing. For nearly a decade, Susan has been invited to share Nia Technique Retreats at the famous Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo. KZN (voted by CNN as one of the top 10 places in the world to meditate). Anyone can take the Nia white Belt; no experience is required. The Nia White Belt is adaptable to all levels of fitness, experience and abilities.


After you graduate as a Nia White Belt, you are invited to continue your Nia journey through one of three Nia Membership paths:

  • Dancing Through Life: For the passionate and committed Nia graduate

  • Sacred Athlete: For the Nia graduate interested in learning and practicing teaching skill

  • Sacred Livelihood: For aspiring Nia Teaching Professionals

If you do not choose to become a Nia member, you will have access to your online training portal for 13 weeks after your training graduation.

Registration and instruction fees are non-refundable. Should you cancel your registration more than 30 days prior to the training start date, the registration fee will be credited to your Nia account. Should you cancel your registration less than 30 days prior to the training start date, you will incur a cancellation fee of $250 which will be deducted from your registration fee. The remaining balance will be credited to your Nia account.
